What is window film?

Window film is a polyester base material, sometimes referred to as Polyethylene Butylene. This material starts out as a clear product with various metal, oxides or nano particle technology added to it to block UV and infrared rays and glare from the sun.

Will window film save money on my energy bill?

Yes, window film can help you save money on energy costs. When installed in residential and commercial buildings, window film reduces the amount of the heat transfer through the windows in the summer, reducing the energy needed to cool the space. In the winter, the window film can help keep heat in, reducing the energy needed to heat the space. Llumar Window Films block up to 99.9% of UV rays and reject up to 80% of the sun’s heat. The exact amounts blocked, as well as the amount of visible light blocked, depends on the type and tint of the film you select.

Does window film block heat?

Yes. Llumar Window Films reject up to 82% of solar energy, keeping your environment cooler and more comfortable. By controlling hot spots and accumulated interior heat, window film helps you save on air conditioning and the energy needed to cool your home.

Does window film reduce glare?

Yes. Adding window film to your home can eliminate annoying solar glare that obstructs televisions and windows. Window film permits viewing with less eye strain.

Will window film work on my windows?

Window film will adhere to all glass and will have varying degrees of results depending on your situation. We offer free consultations to discuss your specific needs, but in nearly every case the answer is yes. There is a type of Llumar window film to suit your needs and your type of windows, doors or solid surfaces that you want to cover. We can apply film to glass front doors, French doors, skylights, high-rise hotels and office buildings, dual pane windows, tempered glass windows and more.

How long does installation take?

Installations will vary in time. For example, four sliding glass doors using a 2 ml sun control product can take as little as three hours. Removal of existing film, smaller windows and excessive calking from the glass manufacturer will add to the installation time.

Residential installations can often be completed in a day. Larger homes may take longer, and commercial projects will require custom estimates of the time needed to complete installation. We can usually work with your schedule and adjust to fit your needs. In addition, window film can be installed either on the interior or exterior of your windows. We’ll help you determine what’s best for your needs and the type of windows of you have.

Will installing window film impact my aquarium fish or plants?

Installing window film should not harm your fish, as their natural UV-absorptive mucus provides built-in UV protection, and moderate-density films can even help reduce algae growth. For aquariums with their own lighting systems, the films are unlikely to affect plants or fish as long as proper day/night cycles are maintained.

Will window film harm my plants?

No, window film will not harm your plants as they primarily rely on visible light, not UV radiation, for photosynthesis. Solar control films with a visible light transmission (VLT) of 29% or greater are generally safe for plant health and growth.

Will applying window film to dual-pane windows cause seal failure or glass breakage?

No, most Eastman’s Performance Films are safe for dual-pane windows as they do not increase air-space temperatures beyond those of OEM tinted glass. Rigorous testing has shown no significant impact on glass seal longevity, and many films come with warranties for glass breakage and seal failure.

Can window film be installed in freezing temperatures?

Yes, window film can be installed in freezing temperatures on dual-pane windows, as they retain enough warmth to prevent the application solution from freezing. For single-pane windows, installation should not proceed if the outside temperature is below -4°C.

Can window film provide nighttime privacy while maintaining outward visibility?

Window film cannot fully provide nighttime privacy with clear outward visibility. Frost/matte films offer day-and-night privacy by diffusing light, but they block clear views. Highly reflective films provide daytime privacy, but at night, the effect reverses unless the interior is dimly lit and the exterior is brightly illuminated. Dual-reflective films, like LLumar’s DR series, reduce interior reflectance to enhance nighttime outward visibility, but still require lighting adjustments for privacy. For guaranteed privacy at night, traditional curtains remain the most reliable option.

Can window film repel insects?

Yes, window film can act as an insect repellant by blocking over 99% of ultraviolet (UV) light, which insects are highly sensitive to. This reduces insect attraction to porch lights, prevents gnats and flies from congregating around UV-lit windows during the day, and minimizes insect accumulation near glass surfaces illuminated by interior lights at night. Window films like LLumar UV CL-SR PS are especially effective in these scenarios.

What are the benefits of using window film?

Window film offers a wide range of benefits, including:

  1. UV Protection: Blocks over 99% of UV rays, reducing fading of furniture, flooring, and artwork while protecting skin from harmful exposure.
  2. Energy Efficiency: Reduces heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter, lowering energy costs.
  3. Glare Reduction: Minimizes glare on screens and improves comfort in bright spaces.
  4. Privacy: Provides daytime or 24/7 privacy with reflective or frosted films.
  5. Safety and Security: Reinforces glass to hold it together in case of impact, enhancing safety and security.
  6. Aesthetic Enhancement: Improves the appearance of windows and adds decorative options for customization.
